Brief Description

The EZOOLO/AnimalBase project is located at the Georg-August-Universität of Göttingen (UGOE) and was initiated as a joint venture of Göttingen University Library (SUB) and the Zoological Institute of the University to provide free access to digitised versions of early zoological works. In the course of the AnimalBase project the literature was analysed closely by reading the books and newly established taxonomic names of species and genera were extracted by hand. Since 2009 UGOE is a member of the consortium in the BHL-Europe project.

Role / Commitment in ALICE

UGOE will contribute to WP2 (understanding text content), where correct identifications of taxonomic names could be evaluated, language expertise could be included, and original descriptions in zoological pre-1800 works could be recognized along with the record in AnimalBase (establishments of new names of zoological species and genera). In WP4 (definitions of use cases) we will contribute our experience as users of digitised literature. In WP 7 (user interface and portal) UGOE will help coordinating the efforts with BHL-Europe as a possible outlet for the products created by ALICE.

Relevant experience

Since 2003 the staff of the AnimalBase group has gained experience in evaluating early zoological literature, and is used to work with digitized literature from UGOE and various other digital library resources. One of the current tasks of UGOE in the BHL-Europe project is contributing to define use cases for the BHL portal.

Profile (qualifications & experience) of individuals undertaking the work

Dr. Francisco Welter-Schultes: Francisco has worked since 1992 as a zoologist specialised in European non-marine mollusc taxonomy, and systematics. His first research projects included compiling bibliographies for mollusc faunas in SE Europe, in the course of which he gained profound experience with early zoological literature. In 2003 he initiated the EZOOLO/AnimalBase project for the digitisation of literature. Since 2009 Francisco has participated in the BHL-Europe project.

Angela Görlich: Angela is an ecologist (distinction zoology), working on population ecology, habitat selection, habitat use and hunting strategies of birds. She initiated and conducted local conservation projects including population modeling. Since 2009 she is a member of AnimalBase team and attained experience in reading and evaluating zoological literature from the late 1700's.

Frank Wieland: Frank is specialized in the morphology and phylogenetic systematics of praying mantids (Insecta: Mantodea). He is experienced in literature research and the use of a variety of internet databases and literature search interfaces. Frank has been working for the AnimalBase project since 2009 where he gained expertise in evaluating text content of pre-1800 zoological literature. He has furthermore contributed to defining use cases for the BHL-Europe project.

Verena Feuerstein: Verena is a specialist of morphology and taxonomy of endopterygotan insects, specialised in Neuropterida. She has gained experience in various searching strategies by using online museum databases, taxonomic databases and digitised historical literature. Verena has been working in the AnimalBase project since 2005.

Oliver Eikel: Oliver is a zoologist specialised in the morphology and systematics of arthropod insects, and has been working intensively in the morphology of their sense organs. Oliver is a predestined target user with a need to find information on plant-insect interactions, ecology or special morphological concepts, for which the name of the involved species or higher taxonomic groups are not important. He has been working in the AnimalBase project since 2009.
